Historical information

These US designed and built S100 class locos were shipped to the UK in 1943 to be used throughout Europe following the D-Day Invasion. When fighting ended in 1945 the Southern Rail bought a quantity of 15 that were unused and adapted them for use on the British Railway system, in particular in and around Southampton Docks. They later went into BR service, with several remaining in use until the end of steam on the Southern Region in 1967.

Four of the original locomotives are in preservation in the UK, plus another two S100 Class which were acquired from the Yugoslavian Railways and which have been converted to USA Class specifications
